The Cape owes its namesake to an English explorer and lawyer named Bartholomew Gosnold who named the land Cape Cod in 1602. The Cape was one of the first places that were settled by the English in North America. The popularity of the area ended up causing a few problems in the 19^th century. When Henry Thoreau saw Cape Cod from 1849-1857 trees and vegetation were in short supply thanks to the area’s considerably high population and the insatiable appetite of the merino sheep. Farming in the area was difficult because of the Cape’s naturally thin glacially derived soil, and improper and extensive farming techniques led to a catastrophic erosion problem which depleted the area of topsoil.

By the time the American west opened up for expansive settling, farmers and residents couldn’t leave Cape Cod fast enough.
